Correction Chiropractic vs. Traditional Chiropractic

Traditional Chiropractic

Traditional Chiropractic focuses on goals such as decreasing muscle spasms, increasing range of motion, and the temporary reduction of pain. This is how most chiropractors practice and most of them do a great job. However, it falls under the category of symptom relief/ symptom management aka “band aid” care.

Correction Chiropractic

At True Chiropractic, our focus is on NeuroStructural Correction. Think of your spine as the foundation for a building. If the foundation was off, would you expect the floors to creak, the walls to creak, and for the windows to not close properly?

Now you can spend time patching all the damage, but you would be doing so with the expectation that in a short time the problems will have to be… repaired again and again.

NeuroStructural Correction looks for the underlying NeuroStructural Shifts in the spine that might be causing your foundation to be off. In the vast majority of cases that make their way to our practice, often as referrals from other chiropractors or medical doctors in the area, is a significant NeuroStructural Shift. These NeuroStructural Shifts are the underlying causes that often reveal themselves as “symptoms”- or what we refer to as Secondary conditions.

Get Back to Normal

Rather than constantly repairing the damage, at True Chiropractic, we focus on correcting the underlying NeuroStructural Shifts and help you reach Normal Structure.

Our services are not for everyone. However, if you are tired of constantly patching the problem and you are looking for a long term solution that you can both feel and see for yourself, then True Chiropractic may be the right place for you.

What is a NeuroStructural Shift?

While no one is structurally perfect, there is a normal healthy range. In the same manner, we can understand what a fever is because we know what the normal temperature is, or what constitutes high blood pressure because we are aware of the normal range. There are established normals everywhere we look, including gauges and warning indicators on the dashboard of your car… letting you know when things are abnormal.

At True Chiropractic, we are looking for a significant three-dimensional shift of the spine away from normal. If the lower back or hips shift, it will cause the shoulders to twist, and the head and neck to shift forcing the entire spine out of alignment. These shifts cause the muscles to spasm, the ligaments to deform, and it disrupts the NERVES traveling down the spinal cord. In other words, the main communication system that connects your brain to your body can be disrupted causing the body to fail to adapt properly.

Cross Crawl Patterns for Neurologic Coordination

What is Cross Crawl?
Cross crawl refers to movements in which we use opposition such as crawling, walking, running, and swimming. Opposition means that opposite sides of the body work together to coordinate the right arm and left leg, then the left arm and right leg.
Therapeutically, cross crawl refers to any intentional cross-lateral activity in which you cross the mid-line of the body, such as touching your left hand and right knee or foot and vice versa. Performing this movement builds the bridge between the right and left hemispheres of the brain, allowing for electrical impulses and information to pass freely between the two, which is essential for physical coordination as well as cerebral activities, such as learning language, reading, and hand-to-eye coordination.
Why is Cross-Crawl Beneficial?
As soon as we start to crawl, this cross-lateral pattern of movement stimulates more complex brain and nervous system development and integration. In addition to firing neural pathways in the right and left hemispheres simultaneously, a cross-crawl movement stabilizes the pelvis while mobilizing the shoulders, reinforcing the walking-gait reflexes.
In short, any time you do cross-crawl, you are re-intergrating your brain and nervous system and re-organizing your mind-body connections. Because we are constantly being bombarded and impacted by multiple stimuli and tasks, practicing cross-crawl throughout the day is one of the best self-care activities you can do for yourself. Think of it as a basic part of wellness, like drinking plenty of water. You will not only feel clearer, you will behave and perform better. Try it before homework, testing, or an important meeting, after anything stressful and between different kinds of activities. If you’ve been reading and it’s time to go play soccer - cross-crawl. If you’re frustrated with a project - cross-crawl. You need to clear your mind - cross-crawl!
Through mind-body science, we now understand that physical coordination precedes cognitive coordination. The ability to do cross-lateral movements with the body literally lays the foundation for other cognitive abilities, such as readiness for fine motor academic work. Though it seems to be a fun, simple exercise, here’s what cross-crawl is doing for you physically and mentally:
  1. Stabilizes your walking gait coordination - builds core strength
  2. Energizes your body and calms your mind - releases tension and stress
  3. Improves your eye teaming skills - essential for focus, reading and writing
  4. Enhances whole brain thinking - your left and right hemispheres work together
  5. Develops proprioception - your spatial and kinesthetic awareness
Cross Crawl also offers an effective way to reboot your nervous system and re-integrate mind and body. You can use it regularly to both discharge and recharge your attention and energy. It’s a great break from over-focusing and it works just as well to bring body and mind online. As a stress buster or a warm-up for doing your best, cross-crawl has significant social-emotional benefits:

  1. Increased self-awareness
  2. Situational insight
  3. Clarity of thought
  4. Impulse control
  5. Physical coordination in general

Spring and Adaptability

Spring is such a wonderful season due to its ability to bring about new life in the form of flowers, bustling activity with the nicer weather, and shedding off the layers of clothes that weigh us down during the winter months. These are all great assets to Spring, but sometimes they can bring about added stress. Many times we realize just how much winter weight we put on and it doesn’t seem to shed off as easily as those winter coats. Or the activity levels and obligations with children ramp up so that often times you are running around from dawn until dusk. With this added stress, the nervous system must ramp up its adaptability so that you can function at a cellular level during all of this craziness. Not only does life get crazier, but often times many people notice that they have an increase in seasonal allergies. Have you ever wondered why your friend doesn’t “have allergies” but they are exposed to the exact same pollen-filled air as you? This is due to an individual’s level of adaptability. We are all exposed to the same “junk” in the air that we breathe, but some can tolerate it better than others. By assessing one’s nervous system and removing any NeuroStructural Abnormalities, the body can then function better and respond to these outside allergens a lot more efficiently than someone who does not get checked.
So what can you do to ramp up your adaptability levels? At home, you can stock up on local honey in your area! By having locally sourced honey, you can be sure that there are antibodies to allergens specific to your region and it is a great way to boost your natural immune system. Honey is also packed full of anti-inflammatories that will help decrease the time you have a stuffy nose. You can also consume Elderberries and other herbs that are high in antioxidants that help repair cells quickly if damaged by an outside source. Of course you can get checked by your NeuroStructural Chiropractor who will ensure that your brain-body connection is communicating as it should so that your body can adapt to all the added stress.

With chiropractic being one piece of the puzzle when it comes to health and wellness, it is extremely important to take action in your day-to-day lives to ensure that you are living a well-rounded healthy life. Spring is finally here, are you ready?

Trajectory of Life

The start of a new year often brings big goals and big aspirations of making this year your best year yet! Often when I ask someone, “Did you set any new goals for this year?” I frequently get the answer, “No, I used to do that stuff, but not any more.”
I look at my life as a book. Each year is a new chapter that brings new experiences, new stories to share and of course, lessons learned from the previous years. A few years back, Mary Ann and myself found it to work best for our growing family to focus on simplicity… thus leading us to describing our focus for the upcoming year with one, two or three words for the year. After much discernment and prayer starting in October 2017, I came to realize that the perfect word for my year in 2018 would be GROWTH!
Now, for those that know Mary Ann well and for how much she loves babies, NO, it does not mean that we are planning on growing our family. This year, growth to me is about growing deeper in relationships with God, Mary Ann, my kids and of course you, growing in understanding how this wonderful and crazy world works, growing in making better health decisions and growing to be a better chiropractor.
One of my chiropractic mentors wrote a book a couple years ago and labeled his first chapter The Trajectory of Life. That chapter has really put life into perspective for me as it is easy for us to get wrapped up into the day to day life experiences, but often we forget to re-assess the overall affect each day has on the long-term outcome of our lives.
With the type of care we provide in our office with NeuroStructural Correction (NSC), we get to focus on the technical sides of detecting and correcting the NeuroStructural Abnormalities (NSA) in the body, but we also get to appreciate and assess (you get to experience the effects of) the overall long-term outcome of your health and the importance this has to do with Trajectory of your Life.
As Brian Tracy is famous for saying in his book, Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, “Keep the End in Mind.” So to ask again in a different way,

“What does this year / chapter have in store for your Trajectory of Life?”
